[Music] Memorizing the Guitar Fretboard / Notes easily with Anki! (DECK INCLUDED)

Hurray! This article has been updated recently 🙂

In 2017, I met ANKI & SRSs after reading “Fluent Forever”, a book about Language Learning.

At the time, I went into an obsession with it that lasted for pretty much a whole month, creating well over 3000 flashcards during that period! (more about it in the article above)

Anki has tremendous potential and is considered the Main toolset in a Learner’s modern bat-belt.

It’s built in a way that guarantees an optimal learning curve, with Spaced Repetition and instant feedback – feedback being one of the cornerstones of Learning!

The flashcards can be easily customized, expanded; you can even add CSS and Javascript to them, if you’re Programming-oriented like this nerd.

After understanding more or less what a Good Flashcard should be structured like (I have some videos on Youtube about that topic), I immediately started brainstorming what kind of shenanigans I could create.

At that time, one of my main Learning Goals was playing electric guitar.

Memorizing the Fretboard is a hard / hot topic in that regard, one that even advanced musicians struggle with. So I made an Anki Deck to help me memorize all the notes easily!

How I created the Deck

At first, I was putting only text the fields, and flipping the Flashcards to test both ways:

  • Where is this note on? For example: Where’s E3?
  • What’s the note in this string in this particular fret? For example: What’s the Note on Fret D11?

I later added sounds for all the notes, which I got on this website, an Extra Field to display the whole Fretboard for reference, and also figured out a cool way to deal with the fact that notes can be in multiple places, which was basically creating Fields and Cards for each Possible Location.

Here are a few images of what the Deck looks like:

This also brought me the idea of using a similar method to Develop Perfect Ear! But since there are other Apps available for the Purpose of Ear training, I won’t develop that into another Deck for now.

You can DOWNLOAD the Guitar Fretboard Deck here!

You can just Import it in Anki and spare yourself some hours or work 🎊 ☺️
